I am not one who usually thinks about gender inequality. That is to say I grew up after the feminist movement, I've always had the right to vote, and going to work full time was not an option but instead expected.I watched Meet The Press this week and an interview with top CEO's about the economy and David Gregory's reporting of the statistics of women CEO's. I'll be honest, I was taken aback and began to think of my own workplace situations and opportunities throughout my working life.
The statistics are that women make up about 60% of the workforce and yet remain severely underrepresented in top positions. They make up only about 14% of CEO's or corporate officers. In 2009 only 15 women CEO's in fortune 500 companies. This is appalling to me.
For all of my liberal politics I think this is one issue I have always let go unnoticed. I do think women generally, and speaking for myself, need to be more supportive of each other. That so called glass ceiling is very much still in existence and hopefully one day will be shattered.
I agree with you 100% that woman are still held back by their sex in some regards. But is it men holding you down? Or is it society as a whole has just watched as we continue these gender patterns?
ReplyDeleteI for one have no issue with a woman in charge. I think that your position in an office, a club, or the government should 100% be decided by your skills and personality/dedication.
I would like to think that MOST men do not go out of their way to hire or not hire woman for specific position. And while I know there are still execeptions to this, I feel it is society as a whole both men and woman alike that has grown comfortable with our social situation.
We see many ambicious woman reachign the top, so its definatly possible. I guess the question is.. Is it harder for a woman to get there? And why?
